Training

There are three training sessions a week - on Tuesdays, Wednsdays and Sundays at ULU, Malet Street. Training sessions fall into two broad categories: : Dryside in a teaching room; and Wetside in the pool.

Training Times

Tuesdays

  • 7.30-9.00pm Dry (second floor of ULU)
  • 9.00-10.00pm Wet (ULU Pool)
  • Wednesdays

  • 4.30-5.30pm Wet (ULU Pool)
  • Sundays

  • 2.30-4.00pm Dry (second floor of ULU)
  • 4.00-5.30pm Wet (ULU Pool)

  • Dryside

Dryside is more theory based and is where we learn and practice first aid skills for competitions. In order to compete effectively members will be expected to train towards their Life Support Award as a basis for their first aid skills. The basic skills we learn include dealing with bleeds, burns, broken bones, various medical conditions as well as adult, child and baby CPR. To hone our skills we practice working in teams of four to deal with mock scenarios in the form of Simulated Emergency Rescue Competitions (SERCs).

    Wetside

Wetside is the more physically demanding side of training where we train for the pool events in competitions. As part of this we learn and practice various rescue techniques for helping people in trouble in water, with the aim that all members should take and pass their Bronze Medallion within their first year. The events we practice for in particular are: the line throw, swim and tow, medley relay, obstacles, manikin carry, and the SERC.
