National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ)The NPLQ is run in-house at ULU by our Pool Trainer/Assessor. Originally introduced in 1989 by the Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS), it is now in its 7th edition. It consists of two units, imaginatively named Units 1 and 2, and is valid for 24 months. Unit 1, The Principles of Lifesaving and Swimming Pool Supervision, is run by an RLSS UK Pool Lifeguard Trainer/Assessor. It is a minimum 31 hour course consisting of resuscitation, spinal cord injury management, pool operational practice, aquatic rescue skills, and first aid. At the end of the course, candidates are entered for a formal assessment. Unit 1 cover the practical skills required daily by lifeguards. Unit 2, The Application of Supervision and Rescue in a Swimming Pool, is run by an ISRM Pool Supervision Trainer/Assessor. It is designed to consolidate much of the theory in Unit 1, giving candidates a deeper understanding of the role of the lifeguard and pool operational practice, with particular emphasis on the legal requirements of the lifeguard and pool operator. Unit 2 is continually assessed over a minimum of 7 hours. National Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NBLQ)The NBLQ is run by the Essex Branch of the RLSS at Chalkwell beach near Southend. Beach lifeguarding is much more involved than its pool equivalent, due to water currents and uneven surfaces. It is much more physically demanding as a result, and should only be attempted by very able swimmers. The basic courses consists of four main topics: There are also a variety of add-on units such as the use of power boats. |
