Community ProgrammeA new initiative for 2007, the club now runs a community programme. We travel out to community groups across London teaching people, over the course of two and a half hours, the basic skills of resuscitation and first aid that will enable them to save lives. We also attend various community events and festivals promoting our courses and offering on-the-spot training. The courses we currently offer are: This course is designed for individuals with no previous first aid or life support experience. It aims to enable participants to treat an unconscious adult who may or may not be breathing. These techniques can be critical in ensuring that casualties remain alive, and buy vital time for the emergency services to respond. The course then goes on to show how to treat two of the most easily preventable causes of unconsciousness: choking and severe bleeding. Save a Baby’s Life does exactly what it says on the tin. It teaches new parents, carers and anyone else how to diagnose and treat various conditions that an infant (under twelve months) may suffer. We begin with the worse case scenario: an unconscious infant that is not breathing. Participants will be shown how to check the condition of the infant, and then to give suitable treatment. It then considers two of the most terrifying conditions a parent kind find their baby suffering from, namely choking and drowning. Recent research has shown that 40% of young children have stepped or fallen into the pond. This course will show participants what to do to ensure that, in the event that an infant falls into water, they have the maximum chances of survival. Moreover, it will mention practical steps to reduce the risk of such events occurring. Interested in organising a course? The ULU Lifesaving Club could run either of these courses for you. All we need is two and a half hours (allowing for a tea break), and enough space to allow participants to practice. We would provide resuscitation manikins, and handouts for all involved. Furthermore, all participants receive a certificate of attendance from the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS). All we need is four weeks notice, in order to order materials from RLSS headquarters.
